Automotive clear coat is the final protective layer that shields paint from UV radiation, scratches, chemical exposure and provides gloss. The durability of the finish depends on choosing the right clear coat.
Classification by Solid Content
MS (Medium Solids) — 40–50% solid content
The classic option. Easier to apply, less demanding on temperature. Suitable for small repairs and spot painting. Standard scratch resistance.
HS (High Solids) — 50–65% solid content
The most popular type. Less solvent → less shrinkage → fewer operations. Good gloss, high durability. Recommended for most bodywork jobs.
UHS (Ultra High Solids) — 65%+ solid content
Top of the range. Applied in 1–2 coats instead of 3–4 with MS. Excellent resistance to micro-scratches and chemicals. Demanding on application technique — experience is required.
Additional Characteristics
- Scratch Resistance — important for dark colours
- Anti-Gravel — resistance to stone chips, important for lower body panels
- Fast Dry — accelerated drying for body shops
- Polishability — whether it can be polished after 24 hours
Application Temperature
Optimal temperature: +18...+25°C, humidity no more than 70%. At lower temperatures use a fast hardener; at higher temperatures use a slow hardener.
Consumption and Prices
One panel: 100–150 ml of clear coat. Full car: 0.8–1.5 L. Price of HS clear coat: 600–2000 ₴/L. UHS: 1500–4000 ₴/L. A hardener (25–50% of the clear coat volume) and reducer (10–20%) are also required.
