How to Choose a Car Primer: A Complete Guide for 2026

The right primer is the foundation of a quality paint job. We explain what types exist, how they differ, and how to make the right choice.

Primer is the first and most important layer when painting a vehicle. It ensures paint adhesion, protects the metal from corrosion, and levels the surface. Choosing the wrong primer can ruin the entire repair.

Main Types of Automotive Primers

1. Acrylic Primer (2K)

The most popular type for bodywork repair. Mixed at a ratio of 4:1 or 3:1 with a hardener. Advantages: excellent adhesion, fast drying time (30–60 min), compatibility with most lacquers and paints. Ideal for repairing damage after filling with body filler.

Application: after body filler, before applying base coat.

2. Acid Etch Primer

Contains phosphoric acid, which etches the metal surface and forms a protective layer. Applied directly to bare metal; the coating is very thin. An acrylic or epoxy top coat is mandatory after an acid etch primer.

Application: bare metal, weld zones, sandblasted areas.

3. Epoxy Primer

The best protection against corrosion. It penetrates the micropores of the metal and creates a reliable, hermetic layer. More expensive than acrylic, but indispensable for heavily corroded surfaces or new body panels.

Application: restoration, high-corrosion-risk areas, new metal parts.

4. Anti-Corrosion High-Build Primer

A combined product: corrosion protection + filling of minor imperfections. Reduces the number of processing steps. Popular in body shops for speeding up the workflow.

How to Choose the Right Primer: A Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Bare metal after sandblasting → acid etch + acrylic (2 coats)
  2. Repair after body filler → acrylic 2K (3–4 coats, wet-on-wet)
  3. Heavy corrosion → epoxy + acrylic high-build
  4. Planned repaint → acrylic 2K over sound existing paint
  5. Plastic parts → specialist plastic primer

Key Specs to Check When Choosing

  • Viscosity: for spray gun — 18–22 DIN4; for aerosol — ready to use
  • Solid content: the higher the % — the thicker the film build
  • Drying time: dust-dry — 10–20 min; fully cured — 1–8 h
  • Sandability: important for high-build primers

Automotive Primer Prices in Ukraine (2026)

Acrylic 2K primer: from 800 to 3,000 ₴ per litre depending on brand. Acid etch: 600–1,500 ₴/l. Epoxy: 1,200–4,000 ₴/l. UA-Pro Industry offers genuine products from leading manufacturers with a quality guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

How many coats of primer should be applied?
Usually 2–3 coats with a flash-off time of 10–15 minutes between them. The total wet film thickness should be 60–100 microns.
Can paint be applied without primer?
It is not recommended. Without primer, paint adheres poorly, peels off over time, and the metal rusts beneath the paint.
How long does primer need to dry before painting?
Acrylic 2K: 30–60 minutes at +20°C or 15–20 minutes in a baking oven at +60°C.
